A gate to Zaanstad and one of the few crossings between east and west, people, neighborhoods, school and shops on either side of river Zaan. The striking profile of the two high counterweights gives the bridge its monumental character. The opening mechanism is spectacular. The counter weight of the bridge has been embedded in both high wings and the massive “ball” under the deck. When the bridge opens to let ships pass, part of the deck goes down and part goes up.
